There are four basic topics upon which Physics is base. These topics are Kinematics, Forces, Momentum, and Energy. All other topics, like electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics, fluids, use the ideas from these four basic topics.

So a good understanding of these four basic topics is the key to successfully navigating all the other topics in classical algebraic based Physics.

For each of these four topics, I have developed a single procedure that a student can use to solve the vast majority of problems. The process leads a student through a logically coherent solution to the problem. Understanding of the underlying Physics principles come from repeated application of the process. 

Learning to solve a Physics problem is not unlike a sport where muscle memory develops with repeated practice allowing an athlete to react to a given situation rather than having to think about how to react.This eliminates the common student complaints of “I don’t know how to start” or “I don’t know what to do next”.  Students just follow the procedure. 

In practice, the procedure may need to be applied a number of times. For example, in a force problem that involves several objects, the procedure is used for each object separately to break down a complex problem into a set of simple problems that can be solved using the procedures. The resulting set of coupled equations can then be solved for the final solution to the problem.

I have found over the years that students do not have difficulty with the Physics itself – they have been experiencing the principles of Physics literally their entire lives. Student frustration with Physics is really a frustration with the mathematics. The procedure as presented pushes the algebraic math issues to the very end of the problem, but by then the Physics problem will have been completed.
